States vary in their voter registration identification requirements.
The required identification is automatically requested when you go through our online Voter Registration process. This information is also available on the State Voting Requirements page. Select your state, and on the following page select your election location and "Identification Requirements" to see all acceptable forms of ID for your state.
While identification requirements differ by state, most states provide at least two options. The two most common are:
Many states will also assign you an ID for voting purposes.
There are some exceptions, for example, some states may ask for your complete 9-digit SSN. These exceptions will be set forth in the registration process for your state. Nearly all states indicate that if you do not have the requested identification you should simply indicate "none," and they will supply you with a number for voting purposes.
